Alexander Lawson, engraver, died in 1846, leaving behind a great quantity of his own and other artist's work. His daughters, Malvinia and Mary, constructed a scrapbook filled with these artworks, which they donated to the Academy. Helen Elizabeth Lawson, the second daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth De Scaife Lawson, was born in Philadelphia sometime in or about the year 1808. An accomplished scientific illustrator, her contemporaries described her work to be "so perfect as certainly leave nothing to be desired", and H.A. Collection consists of a letter in Japanese in black brush work on accordion folded paper from Hirohito, His Highness the Prince Regent, dated December 21, 1926 thanking Pilsbry for a copy of the Manual of Conchology, published by the Academy. Physician, botanist, conchologist, entomologist and mineralogist, Hartman was curator of the Chester County, Pa. Cabinet of Natural Sciences, in 1842. Several of his publications on shells were issued by the Academy during the time he was a correspondent.
